I read the document on Media and Collective Identity in class and then re-read it in my free time and wrote a precis on what was shown within the text so i understood clearly what it is about.
Within this document the first section is on 'Identity' it basically explains how media can influence the audiences 'personal identity'. Some could argue that personal identity i highly influenced by the media as it shows what celebrities are wearing and doing which some people may copy, and therefore copying someones 'personal identity'.
Two statements are shown within this text from David Buckingham and David Gauntlett, which are two of the most influential writers in media. They are both concerned with the relationship shown between media and cultural identity. 'Buckingham' says (in my own words)
'Considering the effect of everyday media and technologies, the media influences our individuality by the things we watch or read.'
Gauntlett says (in my own words again)
'We are all influenced to create our own identity. However, because of the media we may be similar in most ways due to the major influence the media has.'
Both are showing identity is complicated and everyone thinks they've got one.
Collective identity refers to an individuals sense of belonging to a certain group, and with this they are able to form parts of their own personal identity. The USA and our country shares the same language so we are a small collective of people by comparison. This can also link into stereotypes as it is putting certain people into groups. An example used in the text is the film 'Bend it Like Beckham' as it questions to which extent does the film balance its stereotyping of Punjabi life with collective identity and social realism.
On page 62 of the document it considers British films which are related in some way to collective identity (about Britishness) and social realism about Britain. Recurring themes in these types of films include drugs, unemployment, money problems etc. These types of stories need to be shown carefully because what is shown in the media can create serious debate about the 'real world' and real current social issues which may affect people. This social realist text can put Britain into groups (collective identity) as most poeople have to cope with these sorts of problems.

Homework- Essay question intorduction.
Explain how stereotyping in British TV drama and British film contributes to a sense of collective identity.
Collective identity refers to individuals who feel they need a 'sense of belonging' to be accepted within a certain group. Sometimes, the sense of belonging to a particular group will be so strong that it will trump other aspects of the person's personal identity and they will do things that they do not actually do, just so they fit in. Some stereotypes within British TV drama and British film can be recognised instantly, as the audience will be able to relate to how a sense of belonging can be comforting for people. An example of recognisable collective identity within a TV drama is SKINS, as the group of friends within this programme all have an interest in drugs, smoking and rebelling like 'typical teenagers'. Within this essay I will give examples of different collective identities shown within British TV drama and British films...

This was our double production lesson and during this lesson we were able to start to plan and research our chosen final piece production.
My group is a group of three, and we have chosen to produce a music video. Our chosen genre of music we want to produce is Pop, as we feel we coupld have fun when chosing outfits and when filming the video we can use a range of location and 'actors' to make it fun and exciting to watch.
We researched during this lesson using the laptops. We went onto www.youtube.com and watched different types of old 90's pop videos such as Britney Spears and S Club 7 which helped us decide on our final song. We then also produced a time schedule for our group to work by so we have deadlines for each part of the project therefore managing our time well and making sure we have enough time for editing our video a the end as this will be a difficult part of the project.
Our deadline being the 25th March 2010, gives us three months to work on our final production with our schedule plan I think think will help us complete it within the deadlines. We have decided to edit throughout march so we have enough time to make the technical side of the project (transitions and lip syncing etc) of a high quality. I think this will be the most challenging task, but according to our time schedule, if we put in a lot of effort we will produce a film of a high standard. I am excited about working on a project as it will be our last one which means I want to make sure it is the best one yet.

The cameras and editing software becomes easier to use after a certain amount of experience and by using them for short tasks such as the rape awareness advert and underage drinking film. t the start of this year we had to take an 'MOT' type test for the use of camera software, which shows if we know how to use the camera and apple macs well or not. Passing this test, I feel comfortable in using the mac's to edit and cut a film to a standard of high enough quality.
Whenever I use this software I feel more confident and also learn something new everytime which makes the work more exciting to complete.
We have copleted many tasks throught the past couple of months, this is so we feel more confident as individuals when it does come to our final production piece at the end of the year.
The first task was that of the competition about underage drinking for the alcohelp company, and producing a film for the target market of young people about the effects of alcohol and underage drinking. I explained the film previously in my blog and have learnt a lot about mise en scene from this task the most as it had to be realistic in order to be believed by the target audience. I think my group and I worked well as a team as we split the planning, filming and editing up eaqually in order to get the best quality film.
The second film we produced was a swede of a film trailer for a popular film. I was in a group of four and our task was to watch trailers of recent films, and use this to produce a 'copy' of the trailer. Our group decided on 'Run Fat Boy Run' as our trailer. Again, it taught me a lot about the amount of planning that had to be done in order to produce a successful film. Even though we was given a short space of time to work on this production, we still had a chance to work on the macs to edit the trailer to a high standard. This short trailer is more humorous than the others we have produced, but it has still shown me how much effort needs to be put in, in order to get a good quality end product.
The latest filming we had to produce was a music video. I presonally felt this was the most challenging film of all. The song we recieved was Money, Money, Money by ABBA. We had to incorporate the iconic images of money such as diamonds and pearls. We brainstormed our ideas and started to create the film. The loation we used was the drama studio, which had a plain black background in order to create a video as if it was a 'show style' scene. We had to make sure the lyrics fitted with the lip syncing in order for it to look like a professional music video. We had to edit with much care so the lip syncing was perfect. Some obstacles that occured when producing this was that we did not have enough film, therefore we had to use some of the scenes we filmed more than once, the learning curve for me during this was to film as many scenes as possible so we have a choice when it comes to editing. I think the outcome was better than what I had expected and I am pleased with the result of it.
These mini production projects have all been leading up to our final production, so we understand and feel confident when using all software in order to produce films to the best of our abililty. The main thing I will make sure to do when producing a film is to plan well, which includes thinking of the best mise en scene which makes the film more realistic to the audience and edit the film to make it more exciting to watch including variations of camera shots and movement. I am determined to use all time to put in the most effort possible.

Our next project is also going to be a competition with other schools in Essex. It is to produce a film of 3- 10 minutes long based on underage drinking.
Underage drinking has become a major factor within the UK in these present times, and we need to start bringing awareness to all those who participate. The charity that came up with this idea of project are called 'Alcohelp'. The website containing a full brief is www.alcohelp.co.uk/consider
Our target audience for this project is 13 year olds, which personally thinking about it i think this is a too young of age for them to start drinking alcohol as it will damage them later in life, therefore bringing the awarness of alcohol effects will help them realise how bad the problem really is, whether iot be on a regular basis or once in a while. We then thought of things to include in the film about the aspects that cause underage drinking to start with to bring awareness to those involved.
They are:
- Peer pressure
- Violence
- Long term health problems (e.g- liver damage)
- Truancy
- Binge Drinking
This is to raise awareness of the different issues. We have to portray how underage drinking does have serious consequences. For a homework task, we were asked to research into the topic thoroughly and find statistics that will shock our audience. The main one young people do not realise when drinking is that it can cause them permanant brain damage and they have a higher risk of becoming pregnant and having sexual intercourse as they are under the influence of alcohol and dont realise their actions. Young people do not realise these consequences, and until they see it to believe it. Statistics also shown in my homework were that many young children these days can buy alcohol within a shop without being questionned of their age. This makes it easier for underage drinking to occur, as parents do not have control of their actions if they do not know what they are actually doing when they are out socialising. Another fact that shocked me was that children as young as 12 have been admitted as alcoholics due to excessive drinking on a regular basis. This is hard to understand as i stereotypically think of young children being innocent and well behaved and may just go to the park with friends to have fun, and not to binge drink. Many young children say they do this because they have no other activities they can become involved in.
In the second part of our lesson, we started to brainstorm and think about what different aspects of the film could make it more 'realistic' using several techniques. We looked at how documentary type films often use interviewing techniques, cutaways, and still images to get the message across clearly. I like the use of voiceovers and making it repeptitiveso it sticks in the viewers mind. This could be affective when producing the alcohol awareness, as many of these techniques could attract the target audience and inform and also show them of the effects their drinking will have in the future.

During this lesson, we were given the task of creating a short film titled 'Rape Awareness'. This film purpose is to make people aware of personal safety, and should attract the target audience. It is aimed at young girls mainly because they are the most vulnerable. When we researched some statistics of rape and how it occurs we was shocked at what we found. After seeing this statistics we had to think of a way in which the film would be believeable and get the message clearly across. Some statistics included that nearly all rapes are commited by people that the victim has known within their life e.g- ex boyfriends and friends.
My group chose to use this time to research the topic so we had a clearer and better understanding of the topic.
We chose the specific statistics that we are going to use within our film, and next lesson we will start to film this sequence. As our storyboards are completed, when it comes to filming, it will be easier to get down to it and create a good production, as we are all aware of what shots we are going to use and the sequence of events.
As we found in our other tasks, planning is one of the most vital parts to completing a successful film. Although the practical side of filming can takeup a lot of time, the planning helps this become alot easier as we know exactly what should be included in the film.

A2 MEDIA BLOG.
Today we made a start on our second year doing media, this year we are mainly looking at the practical side of film for our next piece. As we are aware, it is going to be much harder and more challenging project compared to other products we have done previously, I will need to be confident in using all equipment in order for my work to be the highest standard it can possibly be.
In this lesson we used the video cameras to try and catch different types of shots in order to get used to a range of shots to make our films/ productions more interesting and technical. We tried shots such as close ups, long shots, canted shots etc and also practicing camera movements like panning and tracking. I learnt that when wanting to keep a shot and the camera still without a tripod, is extremely challenging as every slight movement can be shown especially if the clip would be sped up for an effect. This practice when using the cameras has helped me become more confident and has broadened my idea on some production work in order to make it better and interesting.
