Explain how stereotyping in British TV drama and British film contributes to a sense of collective identity.
Collective identity refers to individuals who feel they need a 'sense of belonging' to be accepted within a certain group. Sometimes, the sense of belonging to a particular group will be so strong that it will trump other aspects of the person's personal identity and they will do things that they do not actually do, just so they fit in. Some stereotypes within British TV drama and British film can be recognised instantly, as the audience will be able to relate to how a sense of belonging can be comforting for people. An example of recognisable collective identity within a TV drama is SKINS, as the group of friends within this programme all have an interest in drugs, smoking and rebelling like 'typical teenagers'.
